Womensing

A cappella Singing

Addison County, Vermont

Based in Addison County, Vermont, Womensing is an a cappella group of six voices performing songs from around the world.  It draws its repertoire from the musical heritage of its own members: French Canadian, Chinese, Italian and American, as well as from different parts of the world.  A typical grouping of songs may begin with a South African freedom chant, move to a Chinese folk melody, on to a Russian lullaby, and finish with an Appalachian round.  In presenting this global repertoire, Womensing seeks to invoke universal themes of community, love, nature, and freedom.  With arrangements that juxtapose solo and ensemble voices, and with harmonies that range from simple to layered, Womensing draws in audiences of all ages to travel the globe in its vocal journey.

Womensing continues to focus on expanding its repertoire and vocal training as well as on performance; participating in workshops with VIDA as well as Womensing member Susan Gallagher Borg of Bodymusic to further refine its ensemble sound.  Members have also brought back songs from their travels abroad to share with the group.  Womensing’s expanded repertoire features songs from India, the Middle East, Central America and the Balkans.

In its interest in collaborating with other artists, Womensing has shared the stage with other performers such as Jeh Kulu, VIDA and Mac Parker.  Womensing has performed at different venues throughout Vermont such as: Burlington’s First Night, Middlebury’s Festival-on-the-Green, Middlebury College Center for the Arts, Ripton Community Coffehouse, Rutland First Night, Vergennes Opera House and Montpelier’s Pyralisk.  With songs from far-away and those close to home, Womensing will inspire listeners to look toward the millennium with hope and joy.
