Metalwork

Huntington VT

Blacksmith James Fecteau uses forging methods that date back to the 14th century to create useful works of art that are appropriate in a contemporary setting. For something that is created to last a lifetime, the way the piece is made is as important as the way it looks.

As soon as I saw the dance, nuance, and simplicity of blacksmithing I knew I had found my vocation. It was as though I had the knowledge in me all along. I have been drawing this knowledge out since then and each day brings new discovery.

I’ve worked in several smithies and have taken the best ideas (layout, tooling, etc.) from them and combined those ideas into a smithy with which I am very happy. My shop, Huntington River Smithy, allows me to accept all jobs big or small: gates, railings, pot racks, chandeliers, fireplace sets, landscape art, architectural hardware, etc.

I’m a member of the Artist-Blacksmith’s Association of North America (ABANA), Vermont representative and member of New England Blacksmiths (NEB), and president of the Green Mountain Blacksmith’s Association (GMBA).

Jim was a Featured Artist at Art on Main in August, 2005.
